21A – Reading Reflection No. 2
Innovation and Entrepreneurship, by Peter Drucker
1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
The substance of the book identifies with the fundamentals of developing your innovation skills. Drucker shows you where to start and breaks them down into 7 areas where to look. My take was that Drucker was trying to insight a way to get your creative juices flowing.
2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
I found it extremely similar. I see where Pryor sounds like he found some of his tips by breaking things down easy into a rule mentality to streamline things. Although as Pryor pointed out, and I hold heartedly agree, that NOTHING beats real life experience compared to reading out of a book. I did feel that the management practices stated in the book by Drucker were different and were more in depth comparable to our class studies.
3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
I would probably focus on apart that I found extremely interesting where Drucker went in depth about "four different strategies."
- All in
- Find new markets
- Find a niche
- Change the market by changing the product or perception of the product.
Drucker clarifies every one of these procedures and searches for the advantages and downsides of each of these. This part peruses quite well although my take on this is it profoundly (like the entirety of the book) established in the deception that you can anticipate the future by enough examination and arranging. I don't totally buy into the tea reading aspect of Druckers conclusion. Its like trying to pick the highs and low of the market. You can study the trends but it is not an exact playbook by any means.
4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
Near the end of the book Drucker switches gears to giving his take about politics, government, and society as a whole. Basically his point of view on politics and the governments role in our lives both personally and professionally. Some I of the points I could take it or leave it. Drucker definitely made some valid points. As an Independent myself I always try and see both sides, although there always seems to be a hidden agenda. I was a little surprised that Drucker felt he should discuss his politics in a book about "innovation and entrepreneurship.
I enjoyed reading your summary of this book, it sounds very relevant to the class, as well as your business idea. For your class assignment relating to the four strategies, I think it would be really interesting to find historical examples of when this has been done by companies. I always enjoy when Pryor brings up unique examples of these kind of things in lecture. Other than that, it sounds like a good book and it's very interesting that at the end the author suddenly shifted to politics.
ReplyDeleteHey Richard,
ReplyDeleteGreat job on your post! I found it really interesting and I thought you did a good job talking about the book you read. I found the book I read to also be connected to what we are learning in class. I liked your idea on what class assignment you would use for an exercise. I think it was interesting when you said that the author changed topics to talk about his take on politics.
