14A – Halfway Reflection

1) Tenaciousness is a competency. What are the behaviors that you have used (or developed) to keep up with the requirements of this course?

Some of my behaviors that I have used come from 2 sources. First, my last 3 years in Valencia Community College in Orlando and obtained my AA in Business with a minor in IT. In many ways, I've wished  I might have continued my education  at Valencia to obtain my BA. I did most of my classes on-site and had an amazing experience there. The staff, Professors, class mates were all fantastic! It was definitely a positive "succeed type of atmosphere.

My second source was my past entrepreneurship of starting restaurants over the last almost 30 years. It will make a man or woman out of you real quick. The work never stops !

One thing I've had to adapt to is how the assignments for the week are split up timeline wise. I'm more of a roll up my sleeves and lets get this done kind of person.

2) Tenaciousness is also about attitude. Talk about a moment or two when you felt like "giving up." What pulled you through? Do you feel like you've developed a tenacious attitude during the past two months? What experience or experiences most contributed to this?

Funny to come across this question of all days. I just had a long conversation with my advisor of how Im considering changing schools. And not because of my Professors or classes , or even my grades. (2 A's and a B) Its because of the school itself. I have had nothing but distractions since starting UF. From proving my residency (Im a native Floridian for 49 years, born and raised), my FASFA has been an absolute mess here. (Not that way at Valencia in Orlando.)Every time I go on my GatorOne account its different amounts. They put something on my account called a "tracking hold" . I just started the school and did exactly what my advisor "advised".  I could go on but I know no one wants to hear it. All this and Im only an Online student. Btw, my advisor had said these are all major issues going on across the board here with students. And that all these issues are being discussed as they are aware of the problems. Like I said above, I starting to think that community college was the answer all along. Besides, UF isn't Yale or Harvard.  UF needs to get it together!!

The "pulled through " part of the question is still "live." Looking at other schools now.

3) Three tips. What are three tips you would offer next semester's student about (1) fostering the skills that support tenacity and (2) developing the 'tenacious mindset' ?

1. Stay on top of your FASFA. Check it everyday and make phone calls as much as you need to.
2. Check your emails !!! Especially concerning all the above issues that Ive had with UF themselves.
3. Make a schedule especially for Online students. You have to have a bit more self discipline with online.

Bonus Tip - The goal is to get your education, don't let the school dictate where. If its not working for you look at other options. There's lots of other great schools out there, especially with all the on-line options.

  1. Hi RA. Great post for next year students! I think your post is so helpful for them because it includes your own experience. Through reading a battery of your posts, I realized how much you influenced younger people in your life so far. Uf needs to get it together! I strongly agree with you. I hope exchange students are also the part of the UF! Nice post!

  2. Great post Richard, I think it is great you were able to have a positive experience at Valencia College, I have noticed many students attending UF from Florida worked to receieve their AA prior to enrolling in UF. Coming from out of state, that is a very very rare case, I do not have any friends who attained an AA while in high school and I think that it is great you are able to be honest about your troubles with UF, I have also had my fair share of troubles and was under the impression that I was the only one. I hope it works out for you!
