30A – Final Reflection

Image
Although this is the end of our journey together in ENT 3003, you now have a set of experiences that you can use to better navigate the future. My hope is that each of you have, to one extent or another, developed an entrepreneurial mindset. That you keep a sharp eye out for problems, and you're willing to offer a solution.  For this final reflection, I'd like you to do a few things: 1) Read through your posts from this semester. Recall all of the experiences you've had a long the way -- the highs, the lows -- the fun moments, and the moments of drudgery, and even the moments of dread. 2) What sticks out to you as the most formative experience? The experience that you'll remember years later? What was your most joyous experience? What experience are you most proud of yourself for accomplishing? This was my first year in a true university. Pryor was the first lecture I watched and was much better then I thought it would be. Most lectures from I have ...

29A – Venture Concept No. 2

1) Provide, again, your venture concept description,  using this form   Opportunity Alfonso's Pizza and Sports Bar is opportunity in abundance! From individuals from the family to the single person that is searching for a Friday night out to have a beverage and catch a band. Likewise we have children's night with various exercises for the youngsters. Conveyance proves to be useful on a portion of the more slow evenings to keep numbers operating at a profit. I consider myself to be proficient in what's in store in my industry, each new interest conveys new troubles and opportunities to the table. I would start with a lone zone, permit it 5 years, change as per the market, and choose a decision on my best strategy (another region and where). From past experience Franchise associations can be perilous, I would take as a lot of time as is required and find the right street to look for after. Florida will transform into a relic of past occasions in my future as I'v...

28A – Your Exit Strategy

All good things come to an end. Eventually, the entrepreneur exists the venture she or he created. Although exit comes at the end of the entrepreneurship process, its implications can be seen throughout. Exit can influence how you identify opportunities, develop products or services, and manage and grow the firm. In this exercise, I would like you to reflect on your own exit strategy. Here's what you should do and write up for your post: 1) Identify the exit strategy you plan to make. Do you intend to sell your business in the next 5 years for a large return? Do you intend to stay with the business for several decades and retire? Do you intend to protect the venture as a family business, and pass it down to your children? This exercise is exactly what I went through in 2014 in exiting my venture starting in 1996. I had 3 different locations all at separate times, the first being the longest of 11 years and doing the best. I chose to sell my business while it was in its...

27A – Reading Reflection No. 3

Thinking, Fast and Slow,  by Daniel Kahneman 1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?  The basis of the book that I took from it was something similar to the saying "think with your head and not your heart." In other words, try to use your instincts less and read the writing on the wall by using facts.  2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003? I though it was a mixed bag. I thought it sided with staying conservative as much as possible and using less of your gut feelings when making decisions. Very cut and dry, numbers based. I believe Pryor teaches more of a hybrid point of view. In my 25 years of business experience I feel this is best. Drawing from both sides of the coin has always worked best for me. When starting out in business like a lot of young students with no prior business history its more difficult when their is no history or prior experience to gain that intuition.  ...

26A – Celebrating Failure

My failure is about my career as a restauranteur. In my past 25 years, I started 3 different locations of a blended concept of Pizzeria/Sports bar. The first 2 locations did extremely well. I was able to stay profitable and then sell the restaurant for a nice profit. The first restaurant even included the property in the sale that sweetened the pot. The last location was in my possession for almost 2 years. My mistake or failure was in bringing in a partner that was extremely unethical in many ways. We did not see eye to eye and as a result the restaurant was a total failure. I lost a lot of money to say the least.  I think failure can be a good thing. It can be a wake up call in many different ways. For me it was a wake up call both personally and professionally. I had realized prior to my failure that I need to get into another line of work. 35 years of restaurant work in one way or another requiring many long hours and missed family time had taken its toll on me. A change ...

25A – What’s Next?

Step 1: Talk about what you think is what's next in terms of products and services for your venture.  I do not have any plans on expanding Alfonso's Pizza & Sports Bar, my product, or my market. In my 35 years of experience in the service industry, I've learned the hard way about trying to expand. I believe the saying, "If it ain't broke don't fix it applies here. Sometimes the best move is not to make a move at all. I've seen many restaurants and bars go out of business because they took on to much to fast. Another reason not to expand is to keep your product consistent. Even with great managers, in my experience, its not the same as having a few key people keeping an eye on whats going out. A third reason is overhead. You never know whats around the corner, like whats happening right now. Having to focus on one location of employees, bills (rent especially), closing the store, taxes, repairs and maintenance, I could go on and on, its much easier ...
