9A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

9A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

Who: Are there certain people or certain businesses that, although they share a lot in common with the others in your opportunity, nevertheless fall outside the boundary? Why?

Businesses that are similar to my Sports Bar Pizzeria concept are everything from major chains such as Dominos Pizza, Papa Johns, Pizza Hut to other Sports bar chains such as Buffalo Wild Wings, Miller's Ale House , Dave and Busters to small mom and pop restaurants in the local area such as Anthony’s Pizza, Wing Shack, Wings&Things, Boardwalk Pizza, NYPD Pizza. Having a full liquor bar and live music can be the variation or “fall outside the boundary” with many competing businesses. In my experience, most chain pizzerias or sports bars don’t supply live music or have the entertainment built in their budget.

What: At what point does the need you identified differ from another need? (Is thirst the same as hunger? Or is the desire to appear fashionable the same as the desire to be loved by others?)

All of the above! It's all relevant, especially concerning restaurants which are based as much on ambience then product quality, Florida even more so with the high tourism. Statistics show if people are having a good time they are more often flexible concerning the quality of the product, food or drink. Alcohol loosens the noose even more on what people are willing to find acceptable with entertainment and food quality. On the other hand, patrons are most likely to be concerned with the degree of service above all.

Why: Is the underlying cause of the outsiders' need different than people who are inside the boundary? Different tastes and different needs of importance as shown below.

In addition to the descriptions of what you find in the interviews, I'd like you to include a table with two columns and three rows:

Kevin liked the concept but asked what kind of bands or music we played. From his past experience combining live music especially bands while eating dinner can be too much, he used the words “loud and obnoxious” to be exact.

Chris -
Similar to Kevin, although a different perspective, wasn’t into the live band scene either but liked the idea of Sundays chill climate with more of an acoustic setting. Chris also recommended a DJ on Sundays or certain nights.

Michelle - Is a vegetarian and does not find the menu diverse enough. Although she loves pizza she thought the vegetarian toppings were lacking. “The traditional toppings weren’t creative enough.” She did say “she’s a music lover, depending on the band I’ll come out for a drink.”

Rick’s - main focus was on food quality, as he said “he doesn't go out much and that most pizza outside of New York is crap.” Spoken like a true New Yorker! He said he would be more interested in wings and what kind of sandwiches we carried. Definitely more of an outspoken character.

Terri- Was more focused on delivery and wasn't interested in the onsite activities. Her focus was on how fast delivery service times took on average. She has 3 kids and a husband and Friday night is pizza night so she doesn't have to cook etc.. She also stated that she and her husband didn’t drink and did not like bars as they were “too loud and dangerous.” Terri seemed to have more of a religious undertone character.

  1. Richard, I think your interviews give a good hint at the difficulties of filling a restaurant with customers. All consumers have different preferences and people can be extra picky when it comes to decide on where to eat. Your concept looks like it can appeal to a wide range of people to help bring in more customers. I like how you made a table of who, what, and why for each interview, but you could also benefit from doing one based off all your findings.

  2. Hey Richard, Great Blog Post! I really like your idea of a sports bar pizzeria, I feel as if it is very different to an establishment such as Dominos, Papa Johns, Buffalo Wild WIngs, Dave and Busters. I have been to towns where I have seen some similarly executed businesses that have been exceptionally successful, I would say you are thinking of something somewhat similar to Swamp Restaurant but with more live music to offer. I agree, Florida is a big spot for tourism, and providing consumers with that extra mile of comfort/engagement while dining out or going for a drink will likely be widely successful. I think one just needs to figure out what age group/population they are trying to cater to before choosing a style of music/drinks etc. otherwise, great idea!
