5A – Identifying Local Opportunities

1. “Massey Services confirms ransomware attack” Orlando Sentinel

Massey Services, a company I once used for my restaurant in Orlando for my pest control needs had a ransomware attack. A ransomware is a cyberattack but with the added attempt to extort money in order to retrieve or save or regain your data from the attackers.
Massey has a major data breach on their hands, but most of all their customers information is at risk. If Massey would have been more current concerning their Firewall system, Massey could have most likely avoided the attack. Constant security updates are a must in today's digital day and age, moi matter the size and scope of the company.
Massey is a prominent Orlando based company that has been around for years. There are lots of Cyber Security companies that could take this opportunity to improve on Massey’s data security. But at this point Massey’s only protection for their customers are against pest, not their data.

Labor workers at Orlando International Airport are pushing for $15 minimum wage. Labor officials argue that workers are well below the national average. Most workers rely more on tips then their working wage which is still well below the national average pay. The over 21,000 workers have the biggest problem in this story as almost half have no health insurance and have problems paying their personal bills such as rent, and less than 10% have any sort of “paid” sick leave. A fifth of the workers are reported to be on food stamps.
The problem here as in most corporate pay structure issues, is the top corporate officers are receiving the majority of the profits. If minimum wage is increased, it usually reflects to the increased consumer, in this case increased ticket prices.

3. Orange County commissioner says Split Oak Forest toll road approval was filed under the wrong code

Another one of Florida's remaining State forests is under attack as Central Florida Expressway Authority, Osceola County, and Orange County decided to approve another toll highway to run right through the middle of “Split Oak Forest.” The only hope left for the forest sits with Vice Mayor and Orange County Commissioner Emily Bonilla. She is standing in the way of the approval for the road wisely claiming that the toll road would endanger one of the last remaining forests. The Orlando residence have the problem on both sides of the coin as the population increases and the environment and state conservation land decreases. As usual the counties are more concerned with the toll road revenue it would create for more spending.

4. Orlando man invents germ-killing device because shared pens are super-gross

Orlando Health bio-repository manager Tom Roberts invented a device that can kill germs on pens. His inspiration for the invention was a sort of germaphobic outlook towards the use of using public pens. After 10 years of research and development Tom says his invention is complete. The problem Tom is trying to solve is the rapid spread of new virus’ into the population. In this story the public has the problem and the most to gain as viruses are on the rise such as the Coronavirus steaming from China.

5. Bow Wow Film Festival raises money for local pets at Maitland's Enzian Theater

The Bow Wow Film Festival is an event were all proceeds go to Greyhound in Motion, raising canine awareness and also fund animal welfare groups all over the country, not just Orlando. The festival is based on a multiple of short films all about what else, dogs. :)
The point of this story is to raise awareness and funds for dogs who have the biggest problem in this story in finding them good homes.

  1. Hi RA! I enjoyed reading your post. My comment is about the article 2. I wonder how the employees receive the tips from the customers in the airport. I've never paid tips to the airport staff in the airport...(except for at the restaurant in the airport) I agree to push up minimum wage for airport staff, especially for those who don't likely receive tips from the customers. I suppose we have more issues related to minimum wage. I hope they will get paid more.

  2. Hey Richard,
I found your article 4 really interesting. I would definitely like to read more about it and find out how this device works. I wonder if people would actually want to purchase it. I would think that it would be a good idea to market it to businesses and organizations who have consumers use their pens when they have to sign receipts or documents. Great job on your post!

  3. Hey Richard! Great post! Being an out of state student, I have traveled in and out of the Orlando National airport numerous times. I agree, it is an issue, many of the workers are unable to go home at reasonable hours because they instead are pulling overnight shifts with the hopes of racking up as many hours working as possible and that shouldn't be the case. With a large number of the airports workers relying on food stamps and having no health insurance, this is a problem that the Florida State government needs to take seriously asap.

  4. Hey Richard, I enjoyed reading through your articles and thought article 4 was pretty interesting. If someone would've told me they were inventing a device that can kill germs on pens my first thought would be "What?" "How?". However, it looks like its been done, but I really do wonder how successful this product will be. I feel like only real, real germaphobes will buy this but it is still a really cool invention nonetheless, good job!
